On the tracks of pilgrims long the ViaFrancigena. ... One of the most beautiful journey of faith in the picturesque Tuscan countryside ...
The Via Francigena, from Canterbury to Rome, is a road that is part of the story, a path beaten by thousands of pilgrims in the past on their way to the capital of the Heavenly Home on earth.
It was mainly at the beginning of the second millennium that Europe was crossed by a multitude of souls in search and this road attests the importance of the practice of pilgrimage in medieval times.
The road was to be done mostly on foot and was divided into daily stages of 20 km each.
Its deep meaning was intimate and spiritual as it went across the three main destinations of faith: Rome, place of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul, Santiago de Compostela, the land of St. James, Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre.
The pilgrims used to travel in groups and bore signs that they were making the pilgrimage (the shell for Santiago de Compostela, the cross of Jerusalem, the key to St. Peter's in Rome).
Around these paths beaten by armies, traders and pilgrims arose spontaneously villages and hubs.
